I’m in Northern Moravia for a few days and we had our first snow here today. When I looked out the window this morning, I saw that the ground was covered with snow. It’s been snowing for most of the day, snowing so hard at times that one inevitably thinks of Christmas. Large, wet chunks of snow are falling from the sky slowly and quietly, creating an idyllic winter scene outside. Too bad I don’t have a camera with me.

We pretty much had a Northern California winter through Saturday, and it was great. The highs were always somewhere around 10°C (50°F), with the occasional jump up to 14°C (57°F). We loved not having to bundle up, we enjoyed the green grass everywhere and the blooming tree at Petřín park, we appreciated being able to have a cup of tea and a pint of beer on an outdoor terrace of a local café. We forgot what snow was and that Czech winter air smells of burning coal. It didn’t look like the real Czech winter would ever come this season. Jeff and I sure didn’t miss it.

Well, winter is here now. It’s Tuesday morning and it’s freezing. What’s worse, it is not supposed to get above freezing for the rest of the week. They say we should be getting some snow today. Looks like it’s time to switch to winter boots.

I feel like a child whose candy was taken away, but I know I really shouldn’t. After all, January’s almost over. Heck, anyone can take Czech winter for a couple of months, right?

The skiing season officially started on December 30 at one of the most popular Czech skiing resorts, Špindlerův Mlýn in the Krkonoše Mountains. The season started very late this year due to the warm temperatures and almost no snowfall before the end of December. Some new snow fell after Christmas when temperatures finally dropped below zero, which also enabled the resort to cover the slopes with artificial snow.

Many other Czech skiing resorts are still closed or are open only partially. The skiing season in Czech mountains typically starts around the end of November.

Update at 11:50 p.m.:
And we had another temperature record today! The Prague Klementinum recorded 16.4°C (61.5°F), the highest temperature ever measured in Prague on this date. This is getting suspicious. Is global warming at play here?

There was snow, and a decent amount of it! True, it was freezing last night and the weather forecasters did predict the possibility of snow showers for the whole country, even in low elevations, even in Prague. But this is very early in the year and I didn’t believe we’d actually see snow before St. Martin. Last year, Prague had its first snow on November 19, which is more like it. Let me tell you, going from short-sleeve weather and 20°C (68°F) to snow and 0°C (32°C) in a matter of a week is not pretty.

We’ve had a lot of sun and blue skies and very little rain. It has also been much warmer overall than you would expect at this time of year. You still see people walking around in short sleeves. Just two days ago, a 165-year old temperature record was broken in Prague where the temperature was measured at 20.6°C (69°F).

Prague parks and nature reserves are especially beautiful now when the fall colors are at their best. We went on a hike to Divoká Šárka yesterday and the scenery around the Džbán reservoir was stunning.

A noticeable drop in temperatures is forecasted starting tomorrow.
