Goodbye Český Telecom, Hello O2 and O2 TV

September 1, 2006 By Jeff 1 Comment

Last week I blogged about the upcoming IPTV service from Telefónica O2 Czech Republic. Well, today Telefónica launched their rebranding of the former Český Telecom and Eurotel brands. There are O2 billboards and a newly launched website at www.cz.o2.com. In addition, they launched their IPTV service called O2 TV.

If we are able to sign up for the service, I will be writing more about it.

Summer Shakespeare Festival 2006

September 1, 2006 By Dana Leave a Comment

The Summer Shakespeare Festival at the Prague Castle is in its tenth year. Three plays alternate in the historic, open-air courtyard of the Burgrave Palace, just off of the Golden Lane. I went to see Othello last week and, surprisingly, had a great time. I say surprisingly because I don’t think of myself as someone who would appreciate, let alone enjoy sitting through two hours of a classical drama – I should add that going to the festival was not my idea.

I didn’t sit through Othello. I spent two hours in a state of utmost concentration with my eyes glued to the stage, trying not to miss a word, forgetting to shiver with cold in the chilly, autumn-like evening air. I fidgeted through the seemingly unending intermission, wishing they had skipped it. I left looking forward to next year’s festival and making mental notes on how to better prepare to make the most out of the experience. 1. Definitely get tickets for the first zone, which means 2. Buy tickets at least a month in advance, 3. Arrive an hour before the start of the show to get good seats, 4. Bring a pillow to put on the seat of the hard metal chair for softness and insulation; if the weather’s similar to that of August 25, 2006: 5. Bring a winter jacket, 6. Wear high boots, 7. Pack a blanket to put over my lap.

The festival started on June 21 and will continue through September 10. Plays start at 8:30 p.m. and end around 11 p.m. More info at www.shakespeare.cz.

Google.cz IS Google

August 31, 2006 By Dana Leave a Comment

Here’s a reason to celebrate. At least for me, a Google junkie. The Big G finally owns the wonderfully simple and logical Google.cz domain, the one and only URL that’s ever going to really work. After years of being stuck with the embarassing and impossible to remember google.com/intl/cs/ (which gives an error page if you skip the last slash – why is that, anyway?), Google Czech Republic now has a proper home on the web. Congratulations, guys!

Great Gothic

August 27, 2006 By Jeff Leave a Comment

The UNESCO World Heritage listed Kutná Hora makes a great day trip from Prague. It’s an easy 45 minute train ride from the main train station and then a short bus or train ride into town. We have some information on Kutná Hora on our site.

The Cathedral of St. Barbara (Chrám sv. Barbory) is considered by UNESCO to be “a jewel of the late Gothic period”. Unfortunately, one section of the cathedral is cracked and it is currently undergoing emergency repairs. There is scaffolding on one side of the cathedral and also in the interior. Work is expected to be completed in 2008.

The statues along Barborská, the street that leads to the Cathedral of St. Barbara, are also having some work done.
